  C. Laelius Sapiens, consul 140 BC, the intimate friend of Scipio Aemilianus and a principal interlocutor of the De Republica; also the title figure of Cicero's De Amicitia.

• Ad Familiares 5.7 §3 not much less than Laelius was

  Laelius Sapiens, the trusted counselor and intimate of Scipio Aemilianus, was the proverbial type of the loyal friend of a great man. Cicero offers himself in that role to Pompey.

• On the Ends of Good and Evil §2.24 Laelius

  Gaius Laelius Sapiens ("the Wise"), consul 140 BC, the close friend of Scipio Aemilianus and a model of cultivated Roman virtue. Cicero says he was called wise not for ignorance of fine dining but for valuing it lightly.

• On Duties §2.40 Gaius Laelius

  Gaius Laelius Sapiens (``the Wise''), consul 140 BC, friend of Scipio Aemilianus; as praetor in 145 BC he broke the Lusitanian war-leader Viriathus. He gives his name to Cicero's Laelius de Amicitia.

• Tusculan Disputations §5.54 the single consulship of Gaius Laelius

  Gaius Laelius Sapiens ("the Wise"), consul 140 BC, friend of Scipio Aemilianus, who held the consulship only once (after an earlier electoral defeat). Cicero contrasts his single honorable consulship with the four bloody ones of Cinna.
