The Puteolanum was Cicero's villa at Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli) on the Bay of Naples, a coastal resort town and major harbour; he plans to reach it by the Nones (the 7th of July).

Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli) on the Bay of Naples was Italy's principal grain-importing port, so its granaries were a symbol of lucrative property. Cicero asks pointedly whether a friend can really be more "useful" than such an estate.
