Gnaeus Pompeius the Younger

Elder son of Pompey the Great; commanded the surviving Pompeian forces in Spain in 45 BC. Cassius, writing from Brundisium in January 45 BC, dreads his victory, calling him a fool who mistakes cruelty for virtue (Fam. 15.19). Defeated by Caesar at Munda in March 45 BC and killed soon after. Distinct from his brother Sextus Pompeius (person:sextus-pompeius).

This "Pompey" is Cn. Pompeius the younger, elder son of Pompey the Great (long dead), who after his defeat by Caesar at Munda in March 45 BC fled to Carteia, a port near Gibraltar. The rumour that he was trapped there proved false, and Cicero is anxious that a fresh round of the Spanish war is still to come.
