Forum Romanum
the Forum
also: the Forum, forum
The civic and judicial heart of Rome; site of the Rostra, the senatorial Curia, the basilicas where Cicero pleads.
Reading notes
- Ad M. Brutum 1.3 §2 placed on the Rostra
The Rostra was the speaker's platform in the Roman Forum, decorated with the bronze prows (rostra) of captured Antiate ships (338 BC); it was the premier stage for public oratory and political address.
- Ad Familiares 5.15 §2 the Forum being common ground, neighbourhood is not required
In the city the Forum Romanum is the shared meeting-place of all public men, so two friends need not live next door to see each other --- yet, Cicero notes, even there they never managed it. The Forum was the civic, judicial, and social heart of Rome.
- Against Catiline, Second Speech §1 Forum
The Second Catilinarian was delivered in the Forum on 9 November 63 BC, the day after Catiline's flight; addressed to the assembled people (a contio) rather than the Senate.
- Against Catiline, Third Speech §1 Forum
The Third Catilinarian was delivered in the Forum on 3 December 63 BC, reporting to the people the seizure of the conspirators and their letters at the Mulvian Bridge the night before.
