Against Catiline, Second Speech
In Catilinam II
Headnote
The second Catilinarian, delivered on the day after the first — a contio in the Forum announcing Catiline’s flight from Rome the previous night and explaining to the people what had happened in the Senate.
The opening peals out the news in four near-synonymous verbs and gives the speech its mood: “He has gone, he has departed, he has escaped, he has burst out” (abiit, excessit, evasit, erupit). Catiline is gone; the open war is the war we wanted; the dagger is no longer at our ribs in the Senate-house. The body of the speech is the famous typology of the conspirators left behind, sorted into six classes: the heavily indebted but well-landed who would rather sacrifice the commonwealth than mortgage an estate; the would-be dictators who think a chance of rule is worth the city’s ash; the bankrupted Sullan settlers who would have to raise Sulla from the dead to be solvent; the chronic defaulters; the parricides and cut-throats Cicero says he does not bother to summon back; and last, peculiar to Catiline, the “praetorian cohort of harlots” — combed, glossy, scented, draped in long-sleeved tunics and gauze veils, tutored to brandish daggers and scatter poisons, who will (Cicero asks) presumably bring their little women along with them to the Apennine snows. The closing pivot is the oratorical antithesis of the speech: on this side modesty, purity, faith, piety, constancy, honour, continence, equity, temperance, courage, prudence; on the other wantonness, debauchery, fraud, crime, madness, baseness, lust, iniquity, luxury, sloth, recklessness. Even if men’s zeal should fail, the gods themselves would compel so many vices to be overcome by these virtues.
The promise that closes the speech — that no good man shall perish, that, by the punishment of a few, all may be safe — will be tested twenty-six days later, when the arrest of the Allobroges’ envoys at the Mulvian Bridge brings the conspirators in the city into Cicero’s hand and forces the question of their punishment.
